IndexThe reason the great rivers and seas can be kings of a hundred valleys is that they excel at staying low. Thus, they can be kings of a hundred valleys.
Therefore, when the sage wishes to guide the people, he must humble himself in speech; when he wishes to lead the people, he must position himself behind them.
Thus, the sage occupies a high position, yet the people do not feel burdened; he stands in front, yet the people are not harmed.
Therefore, the world delights in promoting him and never tires of it.
Because he does not contend, therefore no one in the world can contend with him.
