Chapter 65
The reason rivers and seas can be kings of the hundred valleys is that they excel at positioning themselves below them. Thus they can be kings of the hundred valleys.
Therefore, when the sage wishes to be above the people, they must through their words place themselves below them. When they wish to be ahead of the people, they must place their person behind them.
Therefore the sage dwells above yet the people do not feel burdened; stands in front yet the people do not feel harmed.
Therefore all under heaven joyfully elevate the sage and never grow weary of doing so.
Because the sage does not contend, no one under heaven can contend against them.
