The ancients who excelled at practicing the Way did not use it to enlighten the people, but rather to return them to simplicity.
The people become difficult to govern because their cunning has grown excessive.
Therefore, governing the state through cunning is a theft against the nation; governing without cunning is the nation's blessing.
To know these two principles is also to know the timeless pattern.
To constantly know this timeless pattern - this is called the Mysterious Virtue.
The Mysterious Virtue is deep indeed, far-reaching indeed, moving contrary to the way of things - and only then does it arrive at the Great Harmony.
