The ancient masters who were skilled in the Dao did not use it to enlighten the people, but to keep them naive.
The people are difficult to govern because they have too much knowledge.
Therefore, governing a country through intelligence is the country's curse; not governing a country through intelligence is the country's blessing.
To know these two principles is also to understand the eternal pattern.
To consistently understand this eternal pattern is called the profound virtue.
The profound virtue is deep and far-reaching; it seems to oppose the natural way of things, yet ultimately leads to great harmony.
