Chapter 49
Emerging into life, entering into death.
The followers of life are three in ten; the followers of death are three in ten; those who are living yet move toward the ground of death are also three in ten.
Why is this so?
Because in their pursuit of living, they make too much of life.
I have heard it said that one who is skilled in nurturing life walks the land without encountering rhinoceros or tiger, enters battle without wearing armor or bearing weapons. The rhinoceros finds no place to thrust its horn, the tiger finds no place to sink its claws, weapons find no place to lodge their blades.
Why is this so?
Because in him there is no ground for death to enter.
