The sage has no fixed mind of their own; they take the mind of the people as their mind.
Those who are good, I treat with goodness; those who are not good, I also treat with goodness. Thus virtue becomes goodness.
Those who are trustworthy, I trust; those who are not trustworthy, I also trust. Thus virtue becomes trust.
The sage dwelling in the world draws inward, for the sake of all under heaven muddying their mind. The hundred families all fix their ears and eyes upon the sage, yet the sage treats them all as children.
